These are the eyes I drew for my portrait of Aretha Franklin. I chose these colors because they remind me of the colors in the photos of the universe. Way back in 2008, I had the wonderful fortune to see Patti LuPone in Gypsy. It was a magnificent production. I had the further luck to see it the day after Patti LuPone, Boyd Gaines, and Laura Benanti all won Tonys. When Patti sang, "Rose's Turn" at the end of the show, she was so magnificent, I felt like she was channeling the universe through her voice. When I saw the video of Aretha Franklin singing, "Natural Woman" at the Kennedy Center Honors ceremony for Carol King, I felt the same thing. The immensity and depth of emotions she was able to communicate through her voice is just astounding. (I highly recommend watching the video. She is spectacular and Carol King's reaction is priceless.)
